Virgin

Here you can admire a masterpiece of Annibale Caracci, famous painter of the Italian renaissancerenaissance. The picture was taken after the restoration of the painting.

Here you see a masterpiece by „Annibale Caracci“, view from the back with the light coming through. Each bright spot is due to a perforation or a hole in the paint- and ground layer. And this is just the ‘visible part of  the ice-berg’. The restoration-conservation of such a ‘wreck’ is justified by the fantastic quality and the ‘renommé’ of the artist.

On this picture the worst is already done! At this stage I just started the touch-ups (on red ground). The restoration of this painting took an enormous amount of work, as the picture arrived in desperate condition. The canvas was very unstable, ondulated and with numerous holes. The paintlayer and the preparation were missing in many places. The stretcher of the 19th c. was broken and weakened by voracious woodworms.
