Practical advice

How to live longer and happier with your painting.

  • Hang your painting in an appropriate place, if possible on an inner wall (exterior walls tend to provoke condensation on the back of the painting)
  • Avoid dark and humid places.
  • Avoid heat sources (above a radiator, on a chimney, direct sunlight,  halogen lamp…)
  • Avoid drafty and tight places (hallway, staircase…) or with vibrations (disasterous for pastels)
  • Once a year inspect closely your painting to find changes such as craquelures, cupping or paintlosses.
  • If there is no degradation of any kind and there is a slight dust on the paint surface you may take the dust off with a very soft brush. Do not push or rub strongly and do not add any product whatsoever! Never-ever use any cloth or textile, hard brush or other grandmother’s recipe !

If there is a problem, call immediately!

If you move or transport a painting, always use plastic or paper to wrap it: Never use textile of any kind. It twill hook onto the paint and when you unwrap, it will tear off any loose or impasto parts. If you use bubble paper, bubbles towards the exterior, not towards the paint.

Wrapping alone is not enough! Always put your painting in an artist's cardboard. This way it is protected from both sides and can easily be handled.

Very fragile paintings and pannels should only be transported and stored horizontally, painting towards the top.

If there is any doubt or problem, call immediately !
